At this year's show in Detroit, it was Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller's turn to face the media.

... Following his remarks, Mueller spoke briefly with NPR. Here's the exchange Sunday night:

NPR: You said this was a technical problem, but the American people feel this is not a technical problem, this is an ethical problem that's deep inside the company. How do you change that perception in the U.S.?

Matthias Mueller: Frankly spoken, it was a technical problem. We made a default, we had a ... not the right interpretation of the American law. And we had some targets for our technical engineers, and they solved this problem and reached targets with some software solutions which haven't been compatible to the American law. That is the thing. And the other question you mentioned — it was an ethical problem? I cannot understand why you say that.

NPR: Because Volkswagen, in the U.S., intentionally lied to EPA regulators when they asked them about the problem before it came to light.

Mueller: We didn't lie. We didn't understand the question first. And then we worked since 2014 to solve the problem. And we did it together and it was a default of VW that it needed such a long time.

NPR: And how do you fix the perception that's here in the U.S. — how do you change American thinking about Volkswagen ...

Mueller: We don't want to change the American thinking. We have to make up our mind and we have to change our thinking. And we just do that.

NPR: How do we know when it's changed? How will we know when Volkswagen is different?

Mueller: How? So ...

NPR: What's the proof?

Mueller: I'm CEO in three months, and I'm working day and night to make a change process within Volkswagen. We started this, and it needs some time. It needs, let me say, one year ... one to three years...

Nach dem Rücktritt von Martin Winterkorn im September 2015 im Zuge des Manipulationsskandals wurde Matthias Müller ab dem 25. September 2015 neuer Vorstandsvorsitzender der Volkswagen AG. Im Jahr 2013 erhielt Müller bei Porsche eine Gesamtvergütung von knapp zwei Millionen Euro (statista.com). Da könnte man doch mal einen Coach für Englisch und Business Psychology sich leisten, - auch wenn Gehaltskürzung droht:
Abgasskandal bei VW wird noch lange untersucht werden, Chef Müller für Gehaltskürzungen ( 22.12.2015 • Finanzen100) Auf wie viel Gehalt er selbst verzichten will, sagte Müller nicht.

The to-and-fro is indicative of Volkswagen’s response to the scandal, which is being steered largely by company veterans while customers have had to wait as the carmaker figures out what to do with the affected vehicles. The public-relations gaffe was the latest in a series by Mueller, who has come under criticism for waiting nearly four months to meet U.S. regulators while at times giving the impression that the crisis wasn’t his top priority.

The 62-year-old Volkswagen veteran, who previously ran the Porsche sports car brand, was photographed with a bottle of champagne at the Leipzig Opera Ball shortly after he took over as CEO in the wake of the scandal. He then turned up a few weeks later smiling on the sidelines of a car race in Bahrain. He also cut short his appearance on Volkswagen’s third-quarter earnings call to join German Chancellor Angela Merkel on a trade trip to China.

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen, who is helping to lead a multistate investigation into the automaker, called Mueller’s comments "disturbing" and criticized Volkswagen for not cooperating with the probe...


Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller last week declared it was time to make the company “more fun to work for,” then on Saturday he headed to the Leipzig Opera Ball -- where he was photographed smiling in a tuxedo, with a bottle of champagne on the table and his arm around a former tennis star.
On Tuesday, the fun ended.

In den 90ern gab es ein sehr erfolgreiches Buch von einem Ogger : „Nieten in Nadelstreifen“ - hier (in der ZEIT vom 10. Dezember 1993) recht kritisch rezensiert:

Die „Mißmanager“ in den Führungsetagen werden namentlich vorgeführt: Carl Hahn (früher VW), Peter Tamm (früher Springer Verlag), Heinz Dürr (Deutsche Bahnen), Kajo Neukirchen (früher Hoesch), Jens Odewald (Kaufhof). Otto Wolff, der ehemalige Präsident des Deutschen Industrie- und Handelstages, wird sogar als „größte Niete in Nadelstreifen der letzten 20 Jahre“ dargestellt.

Immerhin:
In einem Punkt gibt (Roland) Berger dem Buchautor allerdings recht: „Die deutschen Unternehmen haben tatsächlich in vielen Bereichen die technologische Entwicklung verschlafen.“
Das trifft wohl über 20 Jahre später immer noch zu. Es spricht ja einiges für die Annahme, dass der fossil getriebene Fordismus schon länger am Ende ist, aber bis heute künstlich beatmet wird...
