"Despite a productive career, Deodato will always be best-known for a 1972 hit record, his catchy adaptation of "Also Sprach Zarathurstra (Theme From 2001: A Space Odyssey)." He began his career playing in a popular local rock group as a teenager. At 17, he was asked to arrange for a recording session orchestra and, despite never having written a score before, the teenager succeeded at quickly learning what was necessary. Although Deodato spent time studying engineering, he eventually decided to make a career in music due to the popularity of his writing. After working in Brazil's studios, he moved to the United States in 1967. Deodato wrote for the American studios and was involved in the still fertile bossa nova movement. He wrote arrangements for Astrud Gilberto, contributed three charts to Wes Montgomery's Down Here on the Ground, and was soon working for major names in several fields including Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Frank Sinatra, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stanley Turrentine, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among others. With the release of Prelude in 1973 (his first solo album and the one that included the "Theme From 2001"), Deodato became a major name for a time. He recorded sets for CTI, MCA, and Warner Bros. through 1979, although the efforts tended to be over-arranged and none caught on as well as Prelude. Since that time, Deodato was mostly outside of jazz, working as a producer and arranger behind the scenes, including for Kool & the Gang during 1979-1983."

In early 70s, Alexey Kozlov has created "Arsenal" band, which became one of the most popular jazz rock groups in the Soviet Union. Arsenal's participation in tours and festivals worldwide has made Alexey Kozlov and his music internationally known. In past ten years six Arsenal LPs and two CDs have been released in the USSR and Russia. One of those, "Created with our own hands" (Melodiya, 1982) has been released in the U.S. (East Wind Records).

Les Paul, the inventor of the solid-body electric guitar, has passed away at the age of 94 today from complications of severe pneumonia at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York according to Northern New Jerseys News 12 cable channel. The jazz guitarists invention led to the Rock n Roll revolution and over the years hes played with many of the biggest names in the genre including Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and Steve Miller.
Recently, Paul had been performing every Monday the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City and spent most of his time at home in Mahwah, NJ with his extended family. Les Paul was one of the most important figures in the development of rock music and he will be sorely missed.

Last Night I Saw Chet Baker

... im Funkhaus des NDR in Hannover: Ein tolles Konzert mit dem NDR Pops Orchestra, der NDR Bigband (Dirigent: Jörg Achim Keller) und mit Nils Landgren (Posaune und Gesang) und Herb Geller (Altsaxofon). Unglaublich: Landgren war Landgren, aber seine Stimme klang, als wäre Chet Baker noch da (obwohl der, wäre er noch da, noch brüchiger klingen würde als bei den letzten Aufnahmen. Ich musste auch an die jüngsten Live-Aufnahmen von Brian Wilson denken ). Landgren sang frühe Stücke aus den 50ern und als Finale nach der Einspielung des Original-Intros von My Funny Valentine aus dem Konzert vom 28. April 1988 (am gleichen Ort mit eben der NDR Bigband und dem damaligen Rundfunkorchester des NDR Hannover, -beide unter der Leitung von Dieter Glawischnik, - Bakers letztem großen Konzert, bevor er am 13. Mai 1988 aus dem Fenster eines Hotels in Amsterdam stürzte-???-)

Landgren also sang eben diesen Song so wunderbar gleichzeitig einfühlsam in Bakers Interpretation als auch ganz eigen und oder weil weniger kaputt als Baker selbst, dass man hören konnte, dass geniale Musik doch nicht mit Vernichtung verbunden sein muss. Vielleicht war das die musikalische Antwort auf Herb Gellers lyrische Hommage an Baker, in der das Faust-Teufelspakt-Motiv die Selbst-Zerstörung zu erklären versucht. Ich höre gerade Bakers eigene Aufnahme vom April 88 und kann nur sagen: beide berühren mich gleichermaßen (Schade eigentlich, dass es das in der Rock-Musik kaum gibt: Interpretationen eines alten Songs, die wirklich neu interpretieren, indem sie einen neuen Blick auf das Original eröffnen )
