Archäologie (CCXXVIII): The V.I.P.'s - I Wanna Be Free 1966
1968 erschien (verspätet) auf dem Fontana-Label das (Island-)Album "British Blue-Eyed Soul", darauf die Offenbarung: Harter Riff-Rock, eine überwältigende Stimme und eine Botschaft: "I Wanna Be Free" - von den V.I.P.s aus Carlisle. Seit der Urbesetzung dabei Mike Harison (lead vocals) und Gregg Ridley (bass), a new line up was created 1967 by adding Mike Kellie on drums, Luther Grosvenor (guitar) and Keith Emerson (keyboards). This line up only lasted a few months before Keith Emerson left to form The Nice. This was the end of The VIPs as the remaining members changed their name to Art.
Art recorded one album "Supernatural Fairy Tales" in 1967 before adding Gary Wright in October 1967 and changing their name to Spooky Tooth.

Zwei Raritäten noch:
- eine schöne Gechichte: One day The VIPs while rehearsing were approached by a young lad wearing a duffle coat and national health specs, carrying a book of poems he had written. The lad suggested they might make good song lyrics. Jimmy Henshaw as guitarist and songwriter of the band tried a few of the poems and gave them back to the lad saying they weren't suitable. After the lad had gone Jimmy commented to the others "What was that supposed to mean - "We skipped the light fandango"?".
Yes, they had just turned down "A Whiter Shade of Pale"!

October 4th 1962 saw a review in trade magazine Record Retailer of a debut single from a new band that was coming out the next day. It read: "A new group from the Liverpool area. Their first record but they already have a strong following and this seems to be the strongest outsider of the week." Love Me Do by The Beatles was released on 5th October 1962 and that band of outsiders were off on their journey that would eventually lead them to conquer the world. Within a week the single entered the UK chart at 49 and it was eventually to go as high as 17 while spending 18 weeks on the chart.
