Zuweilen bemerkt man erst (wie ich schon häufiger feststellte), wenn man vom Tod eines Menschen erfährt, wie wichtig er einem war. Am 13. Januar 2016 Giorgio Gomelsky has died following complications from colon cancer, The New York Times reports.
Gomelsky war der Sohn eines Arztes und einer Hutmacherin aus Monte Carlo. 1938 flohen seine Eltern aus der stalinistischen Sowjetunion und gelangten über Syrien, Ägypten und Italien 1944 in die Schweiz, wo er eine Benediktinerschule in Ascona und die private Ecole d’Humanité in Hasliberg besuchte. Später lebte er in England und ab 1978 in New York.
Gut, dass die Füchtlingsfamilie Gomelsky in der Schweiz aufgenommen wurde und später Giorgio in England; - wer weiß, was aus der Rockmusik geworden wäre, wenn man sie in sichere Drittstaaten zurückgeschickt hätte!

Und Giorgio Gomelsky war wichtig - subjektiv und objektiv!! Ich glaube, alle meine ersten LPs waren von ihm produziert und viele weitere, die ich in den späteren 60ern erstand. Gomelsky opened London’s Crawdaddy Club in 1963 where he booked bands like The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds .... He briefly managed both The Stones and The Yardbirds. The bands whose careers he guided and advised and record labels he helped create is quite astonishing: Marmalade and Zu Records, Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and the Trinity, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme (10cc), The Soft Machine, Daevid Allen and Gong, Magma, and Material, Rod Stewart, John McLaughlin, Alexis Korner. Graham Bond, Plastic People of the Universe..
When he arrived in New York City in 1978 he leased a mid-town loft which became a gathering place for rock and rollers, artists and punks including Richard Hell, Gary Lucas, Bad Brains, John Holmstrom, Jesse Malin, Jean Michel-Basquiat, John Sinclair, Fred Maher and many others. He also “became a well-known “activist” for the Amiga, the multimedia computer with an arty users group including Warhol and Blondie’s Chris Stein.”

Leur manager de l'époque, Giorgio Gomelsky avait jugé que le groupe devait absolument passer à Paris en revenant de la Côte d'Azur où Eddie Barclay les avait invité à une de ses "Nuit psychédélique". Après leur séjour en France, les gars reviennent en Angleterre mais Daevid Allen qui est australien n'est pas en ordre de visa et est refoulé! Les autres continuent l'aventure Soft Machine à 3 tandis que Daevid s'en retourne à Paris et fonde Gong.
