Archäologie CCLXXV: Blondie, Joni & The Wrecking Crew
Wie ich bereits vor langer Zeit gestehen musste, war und bin ich ein großer Bewunderer Deborah Harrys (Affection) und Joni Mitchells. Joni Mitchell welcomes Jian Ghomeshi into her California home for a rare and revealing interview:
Im Übrigen ist es faszinierend, was man über die Geschichte der populären Musik alles nicht weiß, aber wissen kann: Z. B. wer in den 60ern die backing tracks für Künstler wie The Association, The Beach Boys, Mancini, The Byrds, Elvis, The Fifth Dimension, Sinatra, Jan & Dean, Neil Diamond, The Mamas & Papas, The Monkees, Sam Cooke, Simon & Garfunkel… literally, to name only a few (not to mention television theme music ranging from Hawaii Five-O to Batman to Mission Impossible) einspielte: The Wrecking Crew, that loose consortium of West Coast musicians hired to create the backing tracks of more hit records from the early-to-late 60s than you can even remember. These were the go-to guys relied upon by producers like Phil Spector (to create the famed Wall of Sound) and Brian Wilson (to re-invent the idea of rock itself), all while remaining largely anonymous to the outside world. Regular readers of liner notes now know many of the quietly legendary members of The Wrecking Crew: Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Carol Kaye, Larry Knechtel, Leon Russell, Jim Gordon, Earl Palmer, Glen Campbell, James Burton, Jimmy Bond and a dozen others – some managing to carve out careers for themselves, while all are a major facet of your youthful listening experience… whether you knew it or not.
The Mastermind hinter all den Songs, die aus den 60er Jahren ins Gedächtnis eingebrannt sind: Hal Blaine!
Zugabe für hardcore Fans: Hal Blaine - Psychedelic Percussion (1967)
