How can this one be stopped?
What accounts for the failure of ‘The War on Terror’ and associated efforts to counter the spread of violent extremism? The failure starts with reacting in anger and revenge, engendering more savagery without stopping to grasp the revolutionary character of radical Arab Sunni revivalism. This revival is a dynamic, countercultural movement of world-historic proportions spearheaded by ISIS, (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, also known as ISIL, or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant). In less than two years, it has created a dominion over hundreds of thousands of square kilometres and millions of people. And it possesses the largest and most diverse volunteer fighting force since the Second World War.
What the United Nations community regards as senseless acts of horrific violence are to ISIS’s acolytes part of an exalted campaign of purification through sacrificial killing and self-immolation: Know that Paradise lies under the shade of swords, says a hadith, or saying of the Prophet; this one comes from the Sahih al-Bukhari, a collection of the Prophet’s sayings considered second only to the Qu’ran in authenticity and is now a motto of ISIS fighters.
This is the purposeful plan of violence that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State’s self-anointed Caliph, outlined in his call for ‘volcanoes of jihad’: to create a globe-spanning jihadi archipelago that will eventually unite to destroy the present world and create a new-old world of universal justice and peace under the Prophet’s banner. A key tactic in this strategy is to inspire sympathisers abroad to violence: do what you can, with whatever you have, wherever you are, whenever possible...

Im Hinblick auf die Kampfbereitschaft der Kämpfer findet sich eine interessante Passage, in der es um Parallelen zwischen deutschem Faschismus und IS-Klerikalfaschismus geht:
In fact, there is a deeper connection between the Nazi movement and the Islamic State, an association that I noted some time ago. George Orwell, in his review of Mein Kampf in 1940, described the essence of the problem:
Hitler knows… that human beings don’t only want comfort, safety, short working-hours, hygiene … and, in general, common sense; they also, at least intermittently, want struggle and self-sacrifice… Whereas Socialism, and even capitalism in a more grudging way, have said to people ‘I offer you a good time,’ Hitler has said to them ‘I offer you struggle, danger and death,’ and as a result a whole nation flings itself at his feet.
Man for man, the German army outfought all allied armies by any measure. In classical military doctrine, about a 30 per cent loss in a fighting unit usually leads to entropy so, when that degree of destruction is confirmed, the victorious army moves on to the next task... But German units often suffered in excess of 50 per cent loss and held fast, fought bravely and sometimes knowingly to the death in defence of a devoutly believed cause, however horrible it might seem.
Post-war social-psychological studies reveal that the German soldier believed in what he was doing, and fought for a cause as much as for comrades, whereas there is little evidence that the Allies fought for democracy or communism, despite Hollywood and Soviet propaganda. The German armies were destroyed only by the massive superiority of US firepower and by the massive manpower of more than 20 million Russians given over to slaughter. Perhaps it will come to something like that with the Islamic State. But, for now, the means arrayed against this dynamic revolutionary movement look feeble, and what the US government grandly dubs the ‘global ISIL coalition’ of 65 nations seems a very tenuous, if not fatuous, thing (with several of its members ever-ready to stick knives into one another’s back).
Of course, ‘wars are won in the material world,’ a truism that Berger duly notes in The Atlantic, but a spiritual commitment to cause and comrades conveys great advantage, all things being equal. As 14th century Arab historian Ibn Khaldun first noted, comparing Muslim dynasties in North Africa with similar military might, long-term differences in success ‘have their origin in religion… group feeling (asabiyah) [wherein] individual desires come together in agreement [and] mutual cooperation and support flourish.’
In remarks last year, the US President Barack Obama endorsed the judgment of his Director of National Intelligence: ‘We underestimated the Viet Cong… we underestimated ISIL and overestimated the fighting capability of the Iraqi army… It boils down to predicting the will to fight, which is an imponderable.’
Our research suggests quite the opposite: predicting who is willing to fight and who isn’t, and why, is quite ponderable and amenable to scientific study....
1. Orwells Annahme, der Mensch wolle Kampf und Selbst-Opfer - und seine Schlussfolgerungen -, halte ich für schwachsinnig. Sie lässt sich aber in Atrans Argumentation durch eine andere ersetzen, die seinen Gedankengang noch überzeugender macht: Die Annahme nämlich, dass mit dem Implodieren der sozialistischen Staaten das Ende der Geschichte erreicht sei, die Menschen sich im Hier und Jetzt der kapitalistischen Weltordnung (aka Demokratie und Marktwirtschaft) einzurichten hätten und keine konkrete Utopie einer Veränderung (außer der des Wachstums) mehr bräuchten, die sich mE als furchtbarer Irrtum erwiesen hat: Verkürzt gesagt: Gibt es kein Denkangebot einer gesellschaftlichen Alternative mehr, die die herrschenden Zustände in Richtung auf mehr Gerechtigkeit der Verteilung des Mangels und des Reichtums und ein Einlösen der Versprechungen der Aufklärung - mit einigermaßen aussichtsreicher Perspektive und also Anreiz, sich zu beteiligen an dem Kampf dafür - als veränderbar und machbar denkt, fehlt Gesellschaften ein zentrales Integrationsmoment. Das der Idee ihrer eigenen Transzendierung in eine andere Gesellschaft. In der Not einer fehlenden konkreten Utopie wird auf archaische Muster alter Hirtenreligionen und auf ein zutiefst menschliches Verhaltensmuster zurückgegriffen: As history and empirical studies show, what matters in revolutionary success is commitment to cause and comrades.
Maybe. Wenn cause nicht mehr ist als The villany you teach me, I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction. haben wir ein Problem.
Update: Roberto J. De Lapuente zitiert (heute, 22.12., as sinistram) den argentinischen Autor Martín Caparrós: »... die Konturen der kommenden Geschichte und Weltgesellschaft sind noch unklar. Wir leben auf der Schwelle und sind auf der Suche nach einer Zukunft. Wir leben in einer Zeit ohne Zukunft. Und wir fragen uns irritiert, was eine Gegenwart ohne Zukünfte ist.«

Kurzum, die Zukunft ist ungewisser denn je. Das sehe ich auch so. Frank Rieger stellt in der Süddeutschen Zeitung von gestern die richtige Frage: Waren, Daten, Geld - alles fließt ungehindert um die Welt, nur Menschen nicht. Aber wollen wir wirklich, dass Mauern und Stacheldraht in Zukunft "typisch deutsch" sind?
Werden Menschenrechte und Ethik außer Acht gelassen, ließen sich Hightech-Grenzbefestigungen bauen, gegen die die deutsch-deutsche Mauer wie ein Vorgartenzaun wirkt. Einer der Marktführer ist der EADS-Airbus-Konzern, der gerade die Zaun- und Grabenanlage an der saudisch-irakischen Grenze mit Radars, Kameratürmen, Bewegungssensoren und Lagezentren hochgerüstet hat.
Solche Menschen-Aussperrriegel, bewacht von Drohnen, durch Nordafrikas Küstenregionen oder auch quer durch Mitteleuropa zu legen, darauf sind die modernen Festungsbaumeister des europäischen Gemeinschaftsunternehmens bestens vorbereitet. Es gibt sicher auch genügend deutsche Techniker und Ingenieure, die solche Aufträge ausführen würden.
Doch kein Grenzzaun hält, wenn Gruppen von Tausenden Flüchtlingen auf einmal den konzertierten Durchbruch versuchen. Die eigentliche Funktion der technischen Befestigung eines Strichs auf der Landkarte ist es daher, Fluchtwillige so sehr in ihrer Bewegung zu verlangsamen, dass ausreichend viele Soldaten mit Maschinengewehren und Schießbefehl zum Ort des Grenzdurchbruchsversuchs gelangen können, bevor er Erfolg hat.
Die Frage, die wir als Gesellschaft beantworten müssen, ist deshalb: Wollen wir das wirklich? Sollen künftig wieder Mauern und Stacheldraht mit schwer bewaffneten Grenzsoldaten "typisch deutsch" sein?
Ich habe den Eindruck, das sich im medial weiter inszenierten Nebel des Merkelianismus - ich wiederhole Seeßlens vorzügliche Definition:
Merkelianismus ... besteht aus einfachen Grundzutaten: Erzeugung eines Nebels von Harmonie, egal wie erkauft, gelogen, geträumt. Darunter: Stärkung der staatlichen Gewalt, Polizei, Überwachung, Militär, Geheimdienst. Darunter: Abbau des Staates als fürsorgendes und beschützendes Instrument der Gemeinschaft, Übereignung des Geschehens an die großen Spieler des Marktes. Darunter (und da schließt sich der Kreis): Erzeugung eines neuen Wir-Gefühls, in dem die Politik des Neoliberalismus als Schicksal angesehen wird, dem gegenüber nur familiäre Wärme und gleichzeitig Härte helfen kann.

Ich halte das nicht für eine VT, sondern für eine solide geopolitische Analyse, die präzise die Interessen und Strategien der Akteure benennt. Sehr gut deutlich wird das in seiner Analyse des türkischen Einmarschs in den Irak. (Wohl eindeutig boots on the ground. Hier liest man nicht so viel darüber, eher etwas über den forcierten EU-Beitritt!):
Crippled in Syria, Turkey goes for a ‘Sunnistan’ in Iraq
Turkey’s “incursion” into Iraq is a cold, calculated move. And once again, the name of the game is – what else? – Divide and Rule.
Turkey sent to Iraqi Kurdistan – which is part of the state of Iraq - no less than a 400-strong battalion supported by 25 M-60A3 tanks. Now the Turkish boots on the ground at Bashiqa camp, northeast of Mosul, have reportedly reached a total of around 600.
The short breakdown: this is not a “training camp”- as Ankara is spinning. It’s a full-blown, perhaps permanent, military base.
The dodgy deal was struck between the ultra-corrupt Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and then-Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu in Erbil last month.
Torrents of Turkish spin swear this is only about “training” Peshmergas to fight ISIS/ISIL/Daesh.
Absolute nonsense. The crucial fact is that Ankara is terrified of the “4+1” alliance fighting Islamic State, which unites Iran, Iraqi Shiites and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), as well as Hezbollah, with Russia.
In Syria, Ankara is virtually paralyzed, after the “stab in the back” downing of the Su-24; the Russian revelations of complicity between Turkey’s first family and stolen Syrian oil (Bilal Erdogan, a.k.a. Erdogan ‘Mini Me’, denies everything); and the Russian Air Force relentless pounding of Turkey’s fifth column Turkmen. Not to mention the deployment of S-400s and even a third-generation submarine complete with Kalibr cruise missiles.
So Ankara now switches the attention to Iraq with a “counter-alliance”, made up of Turkey; the KRG (which – illegally – sells oil to Turkey); and Sunnis in northern Iraq under the supposed leadership of the sprawling Nuceyfi tribe in Mosul.
This is textbook neo-Ottomanism in action. We should never forget that for the AKP in power in Ankara, northern Syria and northern Iraq are nothing but former Ottoman Empire provinces, an eastward extension of Turkey’s Hatay province. ‘Sultan’ Erdogan’s (unstated) wet dream is to annex the whole lot.
Meanwhile, Daesh still controls Mosul. But Iraqi Sunnis – as well as the Iraqi Army - are slowly setting up an offensive.
So what Ankara wants with this military base close to Mosul is to be part of the game, coupled with two “invisible” agendas; protect their fifth-column Turkmen, wherever they are, and having more boots on the ground to fight – what else – PKK Kurds taking refuge in Iraqi Kurdistan.
‘Sultan’ Erdogan’s whole rationale is that Baghdad does not rule northern Iraq anymore (he’s got a point). But the problem, for Ankara, is that the real powers in the region may turn out to be Shiites and the PKK (that’s far-fetched; but that’s Erdogan thinking.)
‘Sultan’ Erdogan has extremely close business deals with the KRG’s ‘Mobster-in-Chief’, Massoud Barzani – as in the oil exporting deal which, illegally, bypasses Baghdad. Barzani, predictably, has no problems with Turkish military designs; after all “his” oil is paid for by the Turks. As for the clincher, follow geopolitical ace Mick Jagger: it’s a gas, gas, gas.
Interessant auch diese akutelle Einschätzung zum deutschen Kriegseintritt (das diesen im Rahmen der NATO-Strategie, wie Escobar sie herausarbeitet noch einmal in anderem Licht erscheinen lässt!):
Meanwhile, the Humint component is being boosted; more Western boots on the ground, Germans included, branded as mere “advisers” – which, if deployed to the battlefield, may inevitably clash with the SAA. To mold public opinion, the humanitarian bombing faction of German neoliberalcons is already spinning the tale that Assad is the real enemy, not ISISI/SIL/Daesh. Finally, the Germans have made it clear they won’t work alongside Russia and the SAA, but responding to Centcom in Florida and the CDO HQ in Kuwait.
The NATO master plan for northern Syria in the next few weeks and months essentially features US, UK and Turkey fighter jets, with the French still in the balance (are we de facto collaborating with the Russians, or is it just posture?) This is being sold to global public opinion as a “coalition” effort – with Russia barely mentioned.
The master plan, under the cover of bombing the fake “Caliphate” lair in Raqqa, would ideally open the way to a de facto, Erdogan-concocted “safe zone” across the Jarablus corridor, which in reality is a no-fly zone able to harbor a gaggle of “moderate rebels”, a.k.a. hardcore Salafi-jihadis of the al-Nusra kind.
In parallel, expect a torrent of Turkish spin centered on “protecting” the Turkmen minority in northern Syria, actually Turkey’s fifth column, heavily infiltrated by Islamo-fascists of the Grey Wolves kind. It started with Ankara accusing Moscow of “ethnic cleansing”. Erdogan will go no holds barred appealing even for R2P (“responsibility to protect” NATO liberation, Libyan-style.)
To bait fish withal: if it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me, and hindered me half a million; laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies; and what's his reason? I am a Jew. If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. Interessant wäre ein Vergleich mit dem so ganz anders angelegten Shylock, den Orson Welles gab (von dem es heißt er habe, besessen von der Figur, sechs unterschiedliche Shylocks ausprobiert):
Alle drei auf unterschiedliche Weise großartig. Und was kann uns der Vergleich helfen zu verstehen? Den Irr-Sinn zu entschlüsseln, dass - bis heute - aus einer Erklärung universeller Menschenrechte die Schlussfolgerung lautet: Rache, Gewalt ... and it shall go hard!?
Was die westlichen Werte betrifft, gibt es in den letzten Wochen eine interessante Entwicklung in Deutschland. Während nämlich jegliche Demonstrationen – auch z.B. anlässlich der Klimakonferenz in Paris – in Frankreich strikt untersagt sind, wird beim Nachbarn geradezu dazu aufgerufen. Allerorten werden die Bürger mit Nachdruck zu Mut und zur Bekundung ihrer Lebensfreude ermuntert, die sie möglichst durch den massenhaften Besuch von Weihnachtsmärkten und den Genuss von Glühwein auf denselben manifestieren sollen. So kann’s kommen. Noch bis vor kurzem galt Glühwein eigentlich eher als anrüchig, ein zusammengepanschtes Alkohol-Mischgetränk mit hohem Zuckeranteil und auch sonst bedenkliches Zeug zum Kopfschmerzenkriegen, aber inzwischen kann man keine politische Redesendung mehr einschalten, ohne dass einem mindestens einer der Teilnehmer eilig erklären, er jedenfalls würde sich den Genuss dieses Getränks keinesfalls versagen, weil die Weihnachtsmarkt- und Glühweinversagung genau das sei, was der islamistische Feind im Schilde führe: unsere christliche Kultur zerstören! Uns das Trinken von Glühwein auf Weihnachtsmärkten austreiben! So weit wollen wir es bei aller Furcht und Besorgnis nicht kommen lassen, da leisten wir Widerstand! Darauf noch einen Glühwein!
Das kommt uns bekannt vor - interessant, wie Zitate, die doch offenbar eine Sache in ihrem Kern treffen, immer wieder auftauchen und variiert werden. Ich zitierte hier seinerzeit:

Ein in den 70er Jahren im Zusammenhang mit den Berufsverboten in der BRD häufig verwendetes Zitat, das - im übertragenen Sinne (hier wird zZ keiner der Genannten "geholt", wohl aber andere, wenn abgeschoben werden soll) - immer noch von Bedeutung ist.

Compiled by his wife Vera Tariverdieva together with Stephen (in association with his publishing company Antique Beat), ‘Film Music’ includes a selection of the composer’s greatest tracks, including many previously unreleased versions. All were made with new transfers from original tapes and his own reel-to-reel machine. They are thematically programmed around Vera’s intimate knowledge of her husband’s music. It is with her blessing and dedication to see his legacy live on that we are able to bring his music to new audiences.
‘Film Music’ unveils the extraordinary life of an unusual composer who was acutely aware of the political environment although it was not central to his work. The 3LP boxset is beautifully packaged within hard outer slipcase and comes with a 24 page booklet bursting with unseen documents and materials from the Tariverdiev home. The rare photographs come from Mikael’s personal collection including stills from the film sets he was working on, his and Vera’s apartment and images of his studio images.
*Mikhail Kalik - До свидания, мальчики (Goodbye, Boys) (1964/66)
Set in the late 1930s, Goodbye, Boys! (1964) is a story of three teenage friends. In the lazy summer days they roam the streets of a small Russian seaside town as their youth slips away and World War II looms. The boys, one of whom is Jewish, optimistically look forward to their military careers, getting away from overprotective parents, and becoming heroes. However, in the course of the film, it becomes clear that these inexperienced idealists will be sent off to the front lines, where they will encounter horror and tragedy. To tell this story, the filmmaker, Mikhail Kalik, used excerpts from other films, mainly documentary footage, which function as flash-forwards to the war and the Holocaust. The excerpt shown here includes the final scenes of the film: the boys’ departure for the military academy, intercut with a flash-forward to the future war.
VW macht gut Wetter in Katar - so titelt heute meine Lieblings-HAZ (die auch schonmal standortfriendly meldet: CO2-Skandal bei VW löst sich in Luft auf) einen Artikel, in dem es um das Vortanzen von Konzernchef Matthias Müller, seinem Aufsichtsratschef Hans Dieter Pötsch und mit Wolfgang Porsche und Hans Michel Piech auch zwei Vertretern der VW-Eigentümerfamilien am Persischen Golf geht.
Laut „Bild am Sonntag“ sollte es dabei auch um Forderungen des Großaktionärs nach strukturellen Veränderungen bei Volkswagen gehen. So solle der Einfluss des VW-Betriebsrats auf unternehmerische Entscheidungen zurückgedrängt werden.
Das wird nicht bestätigt. Aber - und die Formulierung finde ich brillant -: Im Aufsichtsrat von VV sitzen zwei Vertreter Katars, darunter Akbar Al Baker, der Vorstandschef der Fluglinie Qatar Airways, der als ein ausgesprochener Zahlenmensch gilt.

Deutschlands Entwicklungsminister Gerd Müller (CSU) nannte in einem ZDF-Interview im Zusammenhang mit der IS-Finanzierung das „Stichwort Katar“, in einem darauffolgenden Interview distanzierte sich Angela Merkel indirekt von diesem Vorwurf. Der CDU-Vizevorsitzende Thomas Strobl stellte indirekt die Eignung Katars als Großinvestor in Deutschland infrage... Menschenrechtsorganisationen wie Amnesty International kritisieren die zahlreichen Menschenrechtsverletzungen, die im Berichtsjahr in Katar begangen wurden... Die Arbeits- und Lebenssituation von Arbeitsmigranten in Katar sind teilweise menschenunwürdig. Die Vereinten Nationen forderten Katar im November 2013 mit Blick auf die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2022 auf, die Lage der Arbeitsmigranten zu verbessern. „Bei vielen Einwanderern werden an ihren Arbeitsplätzen die Menschenrechte verletzt, manche erhalten ihren Lohn nicht, oder ihnen wird weniger gezahlt als vereinbart“, sagte der UN-Sonderberichterstatter für die Rechte von Migranten, François Crépeau...

Morgen werde ich eine Unterrichtsstunde miterleben dürfen, in der es (in einem Kunst-Kurs) um Edward Hopper's Morning Sun von 1952 gehen wird, - genauer: um die Beziehung von Raum und Figur. Sehr gespannt, wie die Schülerinnen und Schüler damit umgehen werden.
A consideration of Hopper's work would be incomplete without looking at some of his later pictures, in which his ways of seeing and painting achieved full fruition. In connection with one of his early painting, Lighthouse Hill, we postulated an observer whose "absolute" way of perceiving does not categorize objects according to their usefulness nor seek to possess them. This way of perceiving the world, however, was not achieved by any of the human figures depicted in Hopper's paintings. Not until his later works did a changed view of man appear. In Morning Sun, for example, painted in 1952, a person is portrayed for the first time as a fully perceiving being; the picture successfully depicts the mediation between inner reality and the outside world. Insbesondere seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges lässt sich die Praxis einzelner Staaten ausmachen, ihr militärisches Vorgehen überhaupt nicht auf eine explizite völkerrechtliche Grundlage zu stützen oder mit konfusen oder wenig plausiblen völkerrechtlichen Argumenten zu begründen. Diese Praxis erschwert nicht nur die völkerrechtliche Bewertung des konkreten Einzelfalls, sie trägt zudem dazu bei, dass die rechtlichen Bedingungen legitimer Gewaltanwendung zunehmend unklar werden und Militäreinsätze nicht anhand der formalen Vorgaben der Charta der Vereinten Nationen beurteilt werden, sondern auf der Grundlage politisch und moralisch aufgeladener Kriterien sowie eines diffusen Sammelsuriums mehr oder weniger plausibler und anerkannter völkerrechtlicher Argumentationsfragmente.

- Die Linke hat Norman Paech, Professor für Verfassungs- und Völkerrecht i.R. der Universität Hamburg, beauftragt, eine verfassungs- und völkerrechtliche Analyse des Syrieneinsatzes auszuarbeiten. Er kommt in seiner Analyse zum Schluss, dass der Einsatz sowie die gesamte militärische Aktion der US-geführten Koalition gegen das Völkerrecht verstoßen:
Wie man die Sache auch dreht und wendet, die ganze Konstruktion des Rechts auf Selbstverteidigung steht auf sehr wackeligen Füßen. Soweit sich die Staaten auf die Zustimmung der irakischen Regierung für ihr militärisches Eingreifen im Irak berufen können, ist dagegen nichts einzuwenden. Nicht aber so für die Bombardierungen in Syrien, wo sich nur Russland auf die Zustimmung der syrischen Regierung berufen kann. Die Berufung auf das Recht zur kollektiven Selbstverteidigung zugunsten eines Staates ist jedoch ohne Zustimmung des angegriffenen Staates nicht möglich.
Art. 51 der UN-Charta treffe auf einen Kampf gegen den IS, der völkerrechtlich kein Staat sei, nicht zu, zumal nicht unterstellt werden kann, dass die syrische Regierung den IS kontrolliert: "Würden militärische Verteidigungsmaßnahmen gegen einen Staat zugelassen, dem die Terroranschläge nicht zugerechnet werden können, so würde das nicht nur faktisch die Aufhebung des Schutzes der territorialen Integrität, sondern auch des Gewaltverbots führen." Auch die Resolutionen des UN-Sicherheitsrats legitimieren keine militärische Intervention.
The British musician and producer Brian Eno meets Yanis Varoufakis, former finance minister for Greece’s Syriza government, at Eno’s recording studio in west London. Both are stylish, shaven-headed men famous for their radical ideas. Eno, 67, started out playing synth and wearing leopardskin shirts in the 1970s with Roxy Music and went on to produce, among others, David Bowie and Talking Heads. Varoufakis, 54, who turns up in his trademark leather jacket, describes himself as a libertarian Marxist and has taught economics in the UK, Australia, the US and his native Greece. He and Eno are friends, and recently attended a U2 concert together. Both are phenomenally well-read men, keen theorists who regard themselves primarily as activists.
