Das Lied für die Wehrmacht: "Wir verlassen Afghanistan"
via Ostberlin beatet Besseres
1
From the once conquered celestial heights
We are descending to earth down the charred stairs
Through the aimed salvos of slander and lying.
We are leaving, leaving, leaving, leaving....
Refrain
Farewell, mountains, you have the better sight
To tell who we were in that remote land,
It is not up to an one-sided judge -
A mere office bureaucrat.
2
Good bye, Afghanistan - the realm of shadowy ghosts
It seems, no memory of you should hold good meaning,
And still, our combat commander is in sadness and grieving,
We are leaving, leaving, leaving, leaving
Refrain
Farewell, mountains, you have the better sight
To judge what makes up our pain and our glory
But how will you, our Great Motherland,
Live down our mothers tears and mourning?
3
Its certain we will never come back,
How many of us fell in this long campaign in that land!
So much has not been accomplished, but still -
We are leaving, leaving, leaving, leaving...
Refrain
Farewell, mountains, you have the better sight
To see what price we have paid and what sorrow,
Which friends we have had to leave behind,
What enemy escaped the finishing blow.
4
My friend, split in three your alcohol draught
So many survived of the daring reconnaissance squad
Third toast - for the dead; and the wind is silently grieving.
We are leaving, leaving, leaving, leaving...
Refrain
Farewell, mountains, you have the better sight
To know what we have had, what gave away,
To deem how our sorrows, hopes and way
Will stamp and form in future peoples mind.
5
Our lives in CV's will be squeezed in few lines
Sociologists are those who are forming opinion.
But the Orient will never be ruled by science
We are leaving from Orient, leaving, leaving...
Refrain
Farewell, mountains, you have the better sight
To tell who we were in that remote land,
It is not up to an one-sided judge -
A mere office-bureaucrat.
Farewell, mountains, you have the better sight
To see what price we have paid and what sorrow,
Which friends we have had to leave behind,
What enemy escaped the finishing blow.
We are leaving the Orient
We are leaving the Orient
We are leaving...

Text / Audio
